PAINTING SWEEPING LANDSCAPES

The Hudson River School artists created sweeping landscapes that invited viewers to experience nature in a way that was both true to life and grand. In this course, we’ll create an oil landscape that is inspired by the beauty and history of 19th-century American landscape painters. Students will learn how to approach their landscape painting in a traditional way, which includes composition and preliminary sketching, imprimatura underpainting, medium preparation, color mixing, brushwork, and more. All skill levels are welcome. Some experience with painting is helpful, but we’ll go over everything you need to get started!
