Description
Seeing the Forest Through the Trees – Brian Sauerland    $250.00
Friday, May 1 and Saturday, May 2, from 10 AM – 4 PM ……. Min 7 students/Max 15.
In this 2-day workshop, we will explore some successful approaches to painting trees. We will learn the importance of seeing the big shapes first and how to build form using values.
You’ll learn how to simplify photo references by breaking them down into shapes, defined by light and shadow. We’ll place strong emphasis on working with value first, treating color as a supporting element rather than the starting point. Together, we’ll explore how combining warm and cool greens can bring variety, balance, and visual interest to your paintings without making them feel flat and contrived.
Through focused studies of trees, we’ll explore their underlying structure so you can paint landscapes that feel more believable, cohesive, and alive. You’ll learn how to thoughtfully limit sky holes while also capturing atmospheric perspective, creating a convincing sense of depth, distance, and space. Additionally, we will discuss and learn how to control color temperature and contrast to create exciting and engaging paintings filled with light and expressive mark-making.
Photo references will be provided, but you’re welcome to use your own as long as they feature a clear light source and well-defined shadows.
There will be a full pastel demonstration, individual instruction, and a group critique on the second day.
